Rumors Swirl Over New Photo As McConnell Health Speculation Continues
The latest online debate comes despite McConnell’s office issuing its first detailed health update in more than a month earlier this week.
Loomer shared a photograph showing Chao leaving the rehabilitation facility where McConnell is recovering while wearing a surgical mask, sunglasses and a long navy trench coat.
“Mitch McConnell’s wife Coco Chao was seen leaving the hospital today to visit her husband while wearing a mask,” Loomer wrote on X.
“Who on earth is still wearing a mask?”
Loomer argued the photograph suggested McConnell’s condition may be more serious than publicly disclosed.
“This is more evidence that McConnell’s health is so poor they are making people around him mask up.”
She also questioned why Chao was not wearing a mask in the photograph McConnell’s office released Sunday.
“Why wasn’t she wearing a mask in the photo McConnell’s staff released the other day? Just more evidence it was an AI photo or an older photo,” Loomer wrote.
McConnell’s office has not responded to Loomer’s claims.
The senator’s office released a statement Sunday saying the 84-year-old Republican remains hospitalized after suffering a fall that caused him to lose consciousness.
According to the statement, McConnell did not suffer a heart attack or stroke, did not break any bones and was diagnosed with a mild case of pneumonia.
McConnell said he continues recovering in a rehabilitation facility and is making “continued progress.”
“As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time,” McConnell said.
“And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet.”
The statement was accompanied by a photograph showing McConnell sitting upright in a hospital bed alongside Chao.
Almost immediately, some social media users questioned whether the image was authentic.
Among the claims circulating online was that the newspaper McConnell was holding indicated the image had been taken years earlier or had been created using artificial intelligence.
However, The Washington Post reported that it reviewed the photograph and found no evidence it had been generated using AI. The newspaper also reported that the image’s metadata indicated it was taken Sunday.
The latest photograph of Chao leaving the rehabilitation center has generated new rumors.
Some social media users questioned why she was wearing a heavy trench coat despite temperatures exceeding 100 degrees with the heat index in Washington.
Others focused on her decision to wear a surgical mask, though no information has been released indicating why she chose to do so.
It is not uncommon for visitors to wear masks in hospitals or rehabilitation facilities, either because of facility policies, personal preference or to help reduce the risk of transmitting respiratory illnesses to vulnerable patients.
McConnell has not appeared publicly since June 14.
His prolonged absence fueled weeks of speculation after his office initially released only limited information about his hospitalization.
The senator’s office has since said he lost consciousness after his fall and later developed a mild case of pneumonia but continues to recover.
Chao also drew attention last week after returning from a previously scheduled trip to China.
A spokesperson said her husband’s condition “did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.” and described the trip as a long-planned philanthropic visit, The Independent reported.
While questions about McConnell’s recovery continue, neither his office nor his physicians have indicated that his condition differs from the information released in Sunday’s public update.
